Fall in Breckenridge and Summit County

Fall in Breckenridge and Summit County is the best time to visit
(Mid-September to November) by Jeff Shibley

It’s hard to believe but fall in Breckenridge and Summit County gets sexier and more beautiful. The jaw dropping fall look wows the most critical audience. Call me Shallow Hal, but fall is the best time to visit Breckenridge and Summit County for looks alone. The Colorado Rocky Mountains are loaded with dense stands (or groups) of aspen trees. Their leaves start to change yellow, red, blue and orange as the temperatures drop and the days get shorter. The colors are stunning. Tree stands at higher elevations (11,000 feet above season level) start changing colors in early September.

Fall in Breckenridge

Resort towns, like Breckenridge at an elevation of 8000 ft ASL to 10,000 ft ASL, peak around mid-September. The brilliant leaves continue to transform colors until mid-October or until they fall from the tree. Colors around Denver, the front range and the foothills (Elevation 5000 ft to 7000 ft) usually start in early October and go through the first part of November.

What else makes fall in Breckenridge
the best time to visit?

Fall weather, visitor and hot tub conditions The fall visitors to Breckenridge and Summit County are an extreme departure from the flurry of visitors during prime summer and winter weeks. Oktoberfest weekend following Labor Day attracts lots of visitors but after that, weekends remain mellow until December ski season. Temperatures are mild. Mornings can hover around 30°, but afternoons warm to pleasant 65° to 70°. It is Colorado so expect snow sometime before Halloween. It doesn't stick around long until November.

Hot tub conditions are prime pretty much anytime of the day so soak, soak, soak away. A wise man said "many great things come to those who hot tub during the fall in Breckenridge."

Unique adventure activities during the fall in Breckenridge: Hiking and biking trails are open so hike, bike and dance amongst the spectacular forest foliage. Bring jackets and always check the weather before you go. If you’d like to cover more ground, the fall is a perfect time to off-road in an ATV or Jeep especially if it’s chilly. Stay the trail!

Unique leisure, family fun and romance during the fall in Breckenridge:  The scenic trains in Leadville and Georgetown offer fall foliage rides. There are numerous scenic car drives surrounding the area. Check in with the Welcome center for a map and insights. Golf courses stay open if they can (usually close around the first of October). The Dillon and Frisco marinas also stay open until mid to sate September. Rec paths around Breckenridge and the lake are always open and offer spectacular views. Make sure to stop in at Saphire Point at the summit of Swan Mountain Road. The free gondola rides and Epic Discovery park cut operations to Friday-Sunday only after Labor Day weekend. They close altogether from mid-September until the start ski season in November. The town of Breckenridge in the fall remains very alive with signature seasonal events.
