Summer in Breckenridge and Summit County

Summer in Breckenridge and Summit County is the best time to visit
(summer is on July 18 from 2pm to 4pm) by Jeff Shibley

“I moved here 18 years ago to ski but I have see no reason to go anywhere else during the summer in Breckenridge,” said everyone who ever lived in Breckenridge.

People from around the world take refuge during the summer in Breckenridge and Summit County. They escape 100° temperatures, humidity and mosquitos assaulting their home town. A summer in Breckenridge is paradise filled with fresh crisp mountain air, blooming wild flowers, snowcapped mountains and majestic forests. There are hiking and biking trails that go high into the sky parallel to picturesque rivers, waterfalls and lakes. There are also miles and miles of paved trails throughout Summit County for walking or biking. Many paved paths are wheel chair accessible.

Summer in Breckenridge

What else makes summer in Breckenridge the best time to visit Breckenridge

Summer weather, visitor and hot tub conditions: The summer in Breckenridge and Summit County kicks into gear around Father’s Day Weekend. That’s when signature events like the annual BBQ Challenge and town party occur. It gets busy the first of July and stays busy until mid August or until school starts back up. Weekends are much busier than weekdays. Breckenridge summer daytime temps reach about 78° to 82° for a couple hours. The nights can get down to as low as 50°. There is very little if any humidity. UV rays are strong though, so make sure to apply sun screen throughout the time you’re outside (this is something you should do all year in Breckenridge). The least busy time to go to Breckenridge in the summer is before the Fourth of July and after the second week of August.

Kicking your summer morning off with a soak in the hot tub could be the best idea you ever had. Crisp, cool, peaceful mornings are enhanced with a relaxing soak. Hot tubbing during a warm summer afternoon can work out if there’s shade. Otherwise, hot sun and hot water aren’t a great combination so put your soak off until later if you can. Prime summer hot tub conditions are during the cool Breckenridge nights. You can expect spectacular skies lit up with stars and planets like you’ll see nowhere else.

Remember: It’s important to drink lots of water in Breckenridge. The dry air and warm sun can dehydrate you before you even realize it. Drink drink drink, pee pee pee, makes you healthy in Summit County.

Fun, adventure and adrenaline don’t take a break during summer on Breckenridge mountain. You can still soar down the mountain on the alpine slide, zip lines and mountain coaster (The mountain coaster is open during the winter too). Smaller children can get their adventure on the bungee trampoline, mazes, mini golf, mini zip lines and guided activities. Epic Discovery stays open until mid-September. It’s adventure park fun for adults and kids. (See more about Epic Discovery https://www.breckenridge.com/explore-the-resort/activities-and-events/summer-activities/epic-discovery.aspx) There's also whitewater rafting, off-road four wheeling and ATVing, mountain biking, hiking Quandary Mountain or Spruce Creek, Epic Discovery Park, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, zip line tours and horseback riding.

Unique leisure, family fun and romance during the summer in Breckenridge: Breckenridge is surrounded by lakes, rivers and ponds. These bring fun water activities. About 10 miles north of Breck is magnificent Lake Dillon. The lake is a hub of activity in the summer. It’s loaded with sail boats, pontoon boats, taxi boat rides, stand up paddle boarding, canoes and fishing. The lake has marinas in Frisco and Dillon. Both have canoe, SUP and boat rentals. You can also dine and quench your thirst at the marinas while enjoying the magnificent lake and mountain range views. Lake Dillon is surrounded by hiking trails, paved recreation paths and camp grounds. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre hosts free concerts throughout the summer. You must visit Sapphire Point at the summit of Swan Mountain Road. It’s scenic view high above the lake is popular for many weddings throughout the year.

Other laid-back activities around Breck during the summer include scenic drives. If you don’t feel like driving, there’s scenic railroad rides in Leadville and Georgetown. World class golf can be found at the Jack Nicholas signature Breckenridge Golf Course. Other golf course in the area include: Keystone Ranch, The Raven and Copper Mountain Golf Course. Nearby communities of Frisco, Copper Mountain and Keystone also host spectacular free events, concerts and festivals throughout the summer so make sure to view their calendars. Everything is connected by the free Summit Stage public transportation system.
