Spring in Breckenridge and Summit County

Spring in Breckenridge is the best time to visit (Aka Mud Season, March to mid-June)
by Jeff Shibley

How could spring, known as mud season, be the best time to visit to Breckenridge? More appetizing names for spring in Breckenridge are wild flower season, shoulder season and off season.  Not to long ago, most shops and restaurants would close during this time of year. That’s not the case anymore, but it's still less busy than any other time of year. Robert and Marilyn Smith discovered the beauty of mud season on their very first trip to Breck the first part of May (the heart of mud season).

Spring in Breckenridge

“Our neighbor visits during the spring every year,” Robert recalled. He told us that May was known as mud season in Breckenridge. To be honest, we’re just not that into mud, so we were a little nervous.”

300 inches of melting snow produces mud. As the Smiths learned, cement and drainage systems keep the mud away from sidewalks and roads. If you stay off high country mountain trails, you probably won’t encounter any mud ever – yet the moniker sticks.

“Our neighbor advised us to stop in at the Welcome Center in downtown for ideas of things to do and to buy a Dining Passport book” recalled Marilyn. “Oh, wow. We were amazed to see all those restaurant and bar specials. We ate very well while we were there.” (You can see why spring is the best time to visit Breckenridge for dining deals here: https://www.breckenridgediningguide.com/our-events.)

It’s also a good idea to pick up a copy of the free Summit Daily newspaper found in the lobby of any hotel and in blue newspaper boxes around town. In spring, after the ski resort closes, The Summit Daily is full of more dining deals, specials on activities and incredible winter clothing sales. Spring in Breckenridge is the only time you’ll find discounts like this.

What else makes spring in Breckenridge the best time to visit?

Spring weather, visitor and hot tub conditions The weather is usually mild during the spring days but be ready for a winter blast at any time between March and the end of May. March and the early part of April are famous for spring skiing. Soft slushy snow and warm temps attract spring breakers from all over the world. Spring breakers blow off mid-semester steam on the ski mountain and on Main Street. When the ski mountain closes around the third week of April, the crowds disappear, and mud season gets underway. The crowds stay pretty light until July.Spring in Breckenridge

Some shops, restaurants and bars close for a week of vacation during the off season. But most remain open in the town of Breckenridge and about all of Summit County. The gondola and base mountain activities shut down until they re-open in mid-June. You can still drive up and watch the snow melt. Feel free to grab a jar of souvenir mud to take home with you.

Hot tubbing continues to be the most popular thing to do during the spring in Breckenridge. Temperatures are still on the cold side especially in the evening. Hot tubbing in the spring offers additional benefits like clear paths and decks with no ice or snow. There’s nothing better than a night time soak. Thanks to very little light pollution in Breckenridge, night skies are "lit and loaded" with a gazillion stars and planets. It's a sight you won't see anywhere else.

Unique adventure activities during the spring in Breckenridge: Whitewater rafting, propelled by snowmelt, gets going around mid-May. Full disclosure: it’s chilly so you’ll probably wear a wet suit and the water is big. Be ready for a dose of adrenaline and big splashes of cold water. The paved bike paths are clear, so biking on the miles and miles of Summit County paved bike paths is an option. A-Basin (30 minutes from Breck) usually stays open until the first of June, so skiing is an option. The Summit Stage Swan Mountain Flyer will shuttle you there and back for free. Most lower dirt trails are dry for hiking, or you can strap on a pair of snowshoes and traipse through the snow on higher altitude trails.

Unique leisure, family and romance during the spring in Breckenridge: Snow melt fills the Blue River. It roars and blasts through downtown all the way to Lake Dillon (about ten miles north of Breck). You can easily spend an afternoon walking along the paved path beside the Blue River. In downtown, you may relish a nap on the lawn at the Riverwalk Center Park (been there, done that). Spring is the only time you’ll hear this noise and see this sight. After your nap, you can choose from year around activities like: Hot tubbing, Fly fishing, Spa visits, historical tours, brewery tour, distillery tour, wildlife viewing, Backstage Theatre, Ready Paint Fire (paint your own pottery), downtown shopping, shopping at the outlet malls, art galleries, Continental Divide Winery, Stephen C. West Ice Arena Ice Skating and the incredible Breckenridge Recreation Center.

Museums: Summit Ski MuseumRed, White & Blue Fire Museum, High Line Railroad Museum, Breckenridge Sawmill Museum, Edwin Carter Discovery Center, Briggle House Museum, Alive Milne House Museum, Barney Ford Victorian Home, Mountain Top Children’s Museum.
