But it’s summer and you’re in Colorado. So, load up the car and explore the nooks and crannies this extraordinary place has to offer. Buena Vista located between Salida and Leadville. It is best known as a summer destination and home of the Arkansas River headwaters where rafters put in to ride the rapids. There are also hot springs and trails for hiking, biking and four wheeling. Buena Vista is located to the east of the Collegiate Peaks mountain range known as the highest concentration of 14ers In Colorado. Carbondale is in the Roaring Fork Valley between Aspen and Glenwood Springs. The growing town of Carbondale still holds a remote small town vibe. You can also scream while riding the mountain coaster as it twists through the forest along the mountain side. Copper Mountain is packed with top shelf events that are free to attend. Most all Copper summer events also feature free concerts from national touring bands. Crested Butte is an isolated mountain town that everyone knows about. It's remote location provides unlimited scenic eye candy worthy of any magazine cover. The all-American downtown in Crested Butte is so cute your picture taking finger will get tired snapping photos. Hiking, kayaking and mountain biking are top summer activities. Featured mountain town events in Crested Butte include the spectacular wild flower festival and the Chili and Beer festival. The Crested Butte Center for the Arts hosts many music, food, wine and art events all year 'round. You’ve got to drive through Gunnison to get to Crested Butte. Evergreen is just a smidgen off the beaten path along the I 70 mountain corridor. Mountain town events taking place there are usually found around scenic Buchanan Park and Evergreen Lake. Only 45 minutes from Denver, you can expect to find free concerts at Evergreen Lake, mountain sports events, the Evergeen Jazz Festival, the Evergreen Rodeo, and the Indian Market and Pow Wow. Delta County is a slice of the western slope known for its rich agriculture heritage which means wineries, fruit stands and agritourism you just won’t find anywhere else. Featured events include Paonia’s Cherry Days, Delta’s Deltarado Days, The Mountain Harvest Festival and the West Elks Wine Trail. Westcliffe is located about an hour south of the Royal Gorge Bridge in a valley flanked by the eastern slope of the Sangre D Cristo Mountain range. It is quite a bit off the beaten path and that’s what gives it charm. Surrounded by hiking and biking trails, the area is traditionally known for its ranching. It’s also recognized as a Dark Sky Community where you can see stars like you’ve never seen them before. Alma/Fairplay/South Park are over Hoosier Pass south of Breckenridge and north of highway 285 about an hour west of Denver. Alma is known to have its post office located at the highest elevation of any city in the country. This area is also home to the kids in the South Park series and you can spot a couple landmarks recognizing this. Leadville is about 30 minutes south of Copper Mountain and 40 minutes north of Buena Vista. It sits below Colorado’s two highest peaks. Mt Elbert at 14,440 and Mt Massive at 14,4287. If you’re really ambitious you can hike to the summit of those. Otherwise, I’d suggest diving into Leadville’s wild west and mining history with a visit to one of the 6 museums in Leadville. Surrounded by glacial lakes, Leadville is known as the home for the Leadville 100 endurance sports events. The gem of Leadville is the historic Tabor Opera House. The Tabor Opera House was built in 1879 by Horace Austin Warner Tabor, one of Colorado's most well known mining magnates and still hosts concerts and theatre productions. Alamosa is located just 30 miles south of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, one of the world’s great natural wonders. Alamosa is home to the Scenic Rio Grande Railroad that departs daily during the summer. On the weekends, the train stops at the Fir Summit Amphitheatre where top musicians perform for the passengers. USA Today has ranked the Fir Summit Amphitheatre as a “TOP 10 Outdoor Music Venue” in the Nation! Alamosa also hosts car shows, free summer concerts, sports events, a BBQ festival, rodeos and more. Idaho Springs is only 30 miles from Denver in the Clear Creek Canyon. Idaho Springs can keep you busy with mine tours, rafting, zip lines and hiking. It’s home to Mt. Evans Scenic Byway, the highest paved road in North America and well worth the drive. Events in Idaho Springs include the Rapid Grass Bluegrass festival a Colorado camping and music festival, Burro races and of course races to the top of Mt. Evans. See more about Idaho Springs here.
Georgetown is only 12 miles west of Idaho Springs and 13 miles east of the Eisenhower tunnel (Loveland Pass). Guenella Scenic pass starts in downtown Georgetown and is a spectacular scenic drive. In August, Guanella pass is where the Devil's Peak Downhill skateboarding race takes place. Georgetown is home to Loveland Ski Resort, the closest ski area to Denver. A mountain sports event that anyone can do is the Slacker Downhill Race. It starts at Loveland Ski Area (10,630ft) and its route takes you down to Georgetown (8,400). Meeker is way off the beaten path in Northwestern Colorado. Meeker is the location of the Meeker Massacre, the Battle of Milk Creek, the start of the Ute War, and the catalyst for the Colorado Ute Removal Act. The community is surrounded by the Flat Tops Scenic Byway and 250 miles of motorized off-road trails and mountain biking trails. Meekerpalooza takes place in June and the Meeker Range Call Rodeo takes place over the fourth of July with big name concerts, a parade, races and more. See more about Meeker here.
